讲座题目:Transforming Food Systems——Opportunities from the Past & for the Future(食物系统转型——过去和未来的机遇)

主讲人:Thomas Cherico Wanger(瑞士AgroScope研究所 教授)

讲座时间:2025年10月15日 10:00-11:30

讲座地点:节约楼211会议室

讲座概要:Agricultural expansion and intensification are major drivers of greenhouse gas emissions, soil and freshwater degradation, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution. The resulting environmental and human health costs exceed the value of the global agricultural production system by 2 billion USD, which urgently requires a global implementation of a food systems transformation to tackle the challenges of providing food security for a rapidly growing human population while minimizing environmental impacts and costs. Agricultural diversification, the addition of functional diversity to agricultural production systems, has been suggested to enhance socioeconomic and environmental aspects of food and commodity production as an essential building block of a global food system transformation.

In this talk I will look into recent reviews of previous food system transformations, distill five lessons learned, and link this to my own work. First, I will introduce our global synthesis works to quantify diversification opportunities for global staple food production, long term trends over 100 years, and implications for productivity and nutrition. I will then focus on technology innovations for crop production monitoring and embedded systems to track biodiversity responses to crop management. After elaborating on the importance of interdisciplinary views on food systems and capacity sharing for empowered food systems, I will close by talking about re-thinking long-term funding and investments in particular in nutrition security.
